It is this profound impact that motivates his continual pursuit of excellence in eye care.

Educational Background And Experience

Dr. Elhalis’s journey in the medical field is marked by dedication and excellence. After graduating with honors in biological sciences from Wayne State University in 2005, he attended medical school through the scholars program at Ross University School of Medicine, where he graduated in the top five percent of his class. He then completed his internal medicine training at Henry Ford Hospital in Michigan, followed by his ophthalmology residency and fellowship specialty training at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida.

“The field of ophthalmology has already achieved monumental advancements in cataract and laser surgery, resulting in outcomes that could not have been imagined three or four decades ago. The ability to provide these types of outcomes to patients was likely the greatest influencing factor that led me to choose ophthalmology as a career, ” says Dr. Elhalis.

During his ophthalmology training, Dr. Elhalis cared for service members at the naval air station in Jacksonville, FL, treating ocular injuries and performing laser vision correction for pilots and navy officers. He is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Florida Society of Ophthalmology, Cornea Society, American Society of Cornea & Refractive Surgery, and the International Society of Refractive Surgery.

“It is an honor to help my patients achieve their best possible vision and improve their quality of life,” says Dr. Elhalis.

His academic prowess was recognized early on, leading to his invitation as the White Coat Ceremony Speaker for the incoming medical school class.

Reduce Digital Eye Strain

Ophthalmologist with Ocala Eye, Hussain Elhalis said all that screen time can cause something called ‘digital eye strain.’

“The misconception that it’s specifically blue light that’s causing that, we actually get more blue light just from the sky than we do from our digital screens so a lot of it is just the fact that we’re not taking a break,” Elhalis said.

It’s recommended that for every 20 minutes spent looking at a screen, a person should look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Pandemic side effect: Eye strain

The trouble isn’t necessarily the added screen time, says Dr. Hussain Elhalis, a specialist in laser vision cataract, cornea and refractive surgery at Ocala Eye.

“It’s that we’re so focused,” he explains “When people are on a computer, we just stare. The amount of screen time isn’t the concern. It’s not taking a break that’s causing the strain.”

The easiest way to counteract eye strain, he says, is the 20/20/20 method: “Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break. Just look up and at something different other than your screen.”
